Penelope Rio 2025
If you’re on the fence about Amburana finishes, you might find this more approachable.
Name: Penelope Rio Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Honey and Amburana Barrels- Double Cask Finish (2025)
Proof: 98
What I paid: ~$90
Nose
Lighter than last year’s, but still carrying familiar notes of oak, baking spice, and honey. It doesn’t jump out of the glass like before, but what’s there is well-integrated.
Just the Sip
This year’s release takes a more measured approach. The honey and spice are still there, but instead of an overwhelming cinnamon blast, the sweetness feels more rounded. Last year’s hit hard with spice-forward intensity—this year, the layers unfold gradually, bringing warmth without the punch. It’s still a bold pour, just better balanced.
Verdict: 1/1
We found this release to be much more approachable. Last year’s Rio was a firework show—big, explosive, and impossible to ignore. This year’s trades sheer intensity for refinement. Fans of Amburana will still find plenty to love, while those hesitant on the finish might find this one an easier entry point. It seems to me that Penelope is really listening to the consumer, and giving them what they want.
It’s another standout pour, proving once again that Ambruana-finished whiskey is likely here to stay.
